Dependent Personality and Interpersonal Dependency

Ales Zivkovic, MSc, PTSTA(P), CTA(P) will hold a seminar on the topic of dependent personality features. The seminar is organised in association with the Romanian Association for Transactional Analysis (ARAT).

Research shows that dependency can be, amongst others, linked to depression, abusive relationships, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

The seminar will address dependent personality features and interpersonal dependency. It will look into how dependency influences the sense of self, interpersonal relationships, and symptomatology. It will also address how dependency manifest itself in clinical setting, what are potential treatment strategies aiming at intrapsychic resolution, and potential issues and difficulties of treatment.

The seminar will consist of the theory part which will include integration of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic concepts into transactional analysis. It will also consist of supervision of the participants’ own clinical work to enable better integration of theory and practice.

The seminar will cover:

  • Intrapsychic, and interpersonal characteristics of dependency, including its manifestations in the psychotherapeutic setting.

  • Developmental origins of dependency, especially focusing on the aspect of a child’s developmental need gratification whereby the caregiver’s pathological needs take precedence over the child’s inherent authentic needs.

  • Interconnectedness of developmental violations, including abuse, and the formation of dependent personality features.

  • How developmental violations are re-enacted in adult relationships and how one’s identity depends on such re-enacted violations.

  • Transference and countertransference aspects of dependency.

  • Client’s resistance to treatment, including negative therapeutic reactions (NTRs), therapeutic stalemates, and self-sabotage. This will also entail a look into how the psychotherapist’s unresolved dependency conflicts may influence the treatment process.

The seminar is suitable for fully qualified psychotherapists and trainees in advanced stage of clinical training.

The event will take place online on Saturday, 28th January 2023 from 9am-5pm. It will run in English with no simultaneous translation.
